Dinosaurs
Man has lived on this planet for approximately 3.8 million years. But dinosaurs ruled the world for 165 million years, over 40 times as long.

What we know about dinosaurs comes from the fossils these magical creatures left behind. Perhaps it's this uncertainty that has kept us so fascinated in dinosaurs and their ancient life.

Today we live in a scientific age. We can use computers to reimagine the dinosaurs and what they looked like. We hope people who love dinosaurs will love Rye Studios' latest scientific encyclopedia——Dinosaurs.

Experiencing Shakespeare, a FREE live field trip

Experiencing Shakespeare, a FREE live field trip to the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC. on March 6 at 1 PM CT with student interactives and FREE teacher resources from the IQ Learning Network at Alabama Public Television (APT). To obtain FREE resources and to get information about streaming the program, teachers should pre-register at http://www.aptv.org/Shakespeare/  Registration will assure that teachers receive information to stay up-to-date on developments about the field trip and the resources that accompany it.

This field trip will contain information that is appropriate for teachers and students at grades 6-12. It targets ELA, theater and performing arts, however, since the field trip is from an organization that is a library, students can see and learn more about the use of primary resources and primary source documents, an important skill addressed in many content standards.

Your public television stations will receive/have received an announcement from PBS and from NETA (the National Educational Television Association) about the availability of the program for on-air broadcast and resources but they probably need your encouragement to put it into their schedule. You or your local station can contact Libby Davis (ldavis@aptv.org ) to receive customizable marketing information that will allow the local station to be the provider of the service to teachers in their viewing area and state. If the local PTV station cannot air the live field trip, it is alternately available as LIVE STREAMING online but the on-air video will be better quality and we do recommend on-air as the preferred delivery method.

Both the on-air and the streaming will include Google Moderator and Poll Everywhere, two applications that will allow for student and teachers to actively participate before, during and after the field trip. Students and teachers can participate in a fun activity called “SHARE YOUR SHAKESPEARE” where students and teachers can upload a video clip of your Shakespeare performance for a chance to appear a “mash-up” of videos that will be shown during the "Experiencing Shakespeare" broadcast!

Besides the field trip and the interactives for students, there are FREE teacher guides and interactive Click-Learn-Teach modules that coach teachers and provide immediately useable classroom resources. Click-Learn-Teach modules are quick, easy to use online, interactive resources that are intended for teacher use exactly as the name describes…. Click on the site, Learn information about the topic and quickly find additional resources and teaching suggestions, then immediately Teach the topic in the classroom. The Click-Learn-Teach modules will help teachers introduce, explain, engage, and evaluate the Experiencing Shakespeare learning experience with their students.

We are very pleased to offer these new services to teachers and students everywhere and we look forward to participating with you during, before and after the events. In the coming months, look for announcements about other free virtual field trips from APT’s IQLearningNetwork.

Designing the School Around the Student

This Minnesota high school's planning team started from scratch and created a 21st century facility that turns the traditional classroom model inside out. Instead of waiting for students to come to class, teachers move about the school equipped with their laptops and other teaching tools.
What makes East Ridge High School different from its predecessors? According to Aaron Harper, principal of the 1,725-student Minnesota institution, it's the fact that his institution's original design was centered on technology's expanding role in the educational environment.

The Classroom Evolved
This is the third segment in a three-part series of articles focused on classroom design. Each article in the series looks at a how schools are reinterpreting the traditional classroom for the 21st century.

NASA Smart Skies education project has released a new mobile app called Sector 33

The NASA Smart Skies education project has released a new mobile app called Sector 33 that serves as a companion piece to the LineUp With Math grades 5-9 classroom activity.  In LineUp With Math, students learn to solve distance-rate-time problems in the context of air traffic control using print-based workbooks and a web-based air traffic control simulator.  The Sector 33 mobile app is an extension to LineUp With Math’s web-based simulator and takes on a game-like quality, giving players both a stronger role-playing experience and a greater problem-solving challenge.  Sector 33 is designed to interest middle school and high school students in aeronautics-related careers while connecting mathematics, problem solving, and decision-making skills to the real world.

In Sector 33, the player role-plays an air traffic controller and guides two to five airplanes through a sector of airspace by changing the planes’ routes and speeds.  The challenge is to get the planes through the sector in the fastest time possible while maintaining proper spacing.  The game consists of 35 problems divided among four levels (Trainee, Basic, Expert, and Master), with the number of planes increasing with each level. Hints are provided in the Trainee level to guide students to solve the problems mathematically and systematically.  Unlike LineUp With Math’s web-based classroom simulator, Sector 33 is played in “live” mode without a pause feature, bringing more realism to the game.  Additional features include a scoring system and audio feedback from the pilots as route and speed changes are made.

Sector 33 is currently available for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch mobile devices and is free and available for download from the App Store.  An Android version of the app is currently under development and will be made available in the Android Marketplace later in 2012.

10 Big Reasons Parents Shouldn’t Save for College

Thanks to Kaitlyn Cole from http://Onlineuniversities.com/

For many parents, saving for college begins in the first few months after a new baby arrives, giving them plenty of time to build up savings necessary to pay for their child’s college tuition. For some families this may be a good option, but for others, as surprising as it might sound, saving for college isn’t the best use of their income and available funds.

It may seem like it spits in the face of common sense to advise parents not to save for college, but that’s just what many financial experts say may be the best choice for certain families. We’re not suggesting that no one should ever save for college, but it is smart to figure out whether or not college savings is the best way to help you and your children have a secure financial future.
