The Space Place has always been about making learning fun and painless. Of course, one of the best ways to do that with young students is to include a game with a lesson. That makes the experience all about having fun, and, oh, by the way, maybe catching on to a new idea.

New at spaceplace.nasa.gov
Now the Space Place is taking fun for a walk. Leaping into the world of mobile applications, we’ve launched our second iPhone game (also optimized for iPad).

“Comet Quest” puts the player in charge of the exciting Rosetta mission to a comet. Rosetta will be the first spacecraft to orbit a comet and drop a lander on the surface. So, in the game, players drop a lander, then record cracks and craters, jets of gas, tail and coma changes, and chunks of ice flying off the comet. Players must avoid hitting those pesky solid chunks, retrieve data from the lander and transmit data to Earth. Music and sound effects make for an immersive experience. Points accumulate based on lander dropping skill and success at recording events and avoiding crashes. Bonus points may be earned at the end of the game for answering comet-related questions. Space Place en Español
We’ve mentioned our first mobile game app “Satellite Insight” in a previous issue. Now, It is the first NASA app to be available in Spanish. Along with the link to the Apple App Store, a Spanish Web version of the game is also available at http://spaceplace.nasa.gov/satellite-insight/sp.

To recap, in “Satellite Insight,” you are the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite R-Series, or GOES-R, environmental satellite, and your job is to keep up with the massive flow of data that your advanced instruments are collecting.

The game play is somewhat "Tetris"-like, with colorful tiles representing different types of data falling into a grid on the display. With music and sound effects, "Satellite Insight" is addictive for some we are told.

Spotlight on Webmaster’s Faves
When the webmaster spends her lunch time playing a Space Place game over and over, you know it must be something special. She can often be spied playing “Ozone Trap-n-Zap” and “Photon Pileup.”

Of “Trap-n-Zap” she says, “Well, somebody’s got to do something to improve the air quality around here!” That’s because ozone near Earth’s surface is damaging to the health of living things. It also acts as a greenhouse gas when it’s hanging out at the top of the troposphere (the layer nearest Earth’s surface). But between those two regions of bad ozone is a layer of good ozone, where ozone acts as a pollution scrubber. And higher up still, in the stratosphere, it protects us from harmful ultraviolet rays. So, our webmaster spends her spare time trapping the good ozone and zapping the bad ozone. Help her out at http://spaceplace.nasa.gov/ozone.

“Photon Pileup” is a horse of a different color -- several colors, actually. She says, “I just like the pretty photons. The purple ones are the most important for making the ultraviolet Galaxy Evolution Explorer space pictures. I like the red ones (for infrared light) best, but I have to survive to Level 5 to see them! That’s a challenge.” Can you get far enough to see the red photons? For the Classroom
For groups of two or more players, board games are great. How about an online board game? That’s “Wild Weather Adventure.” Up to four players pick a player name (like Hurricane or Nimbus) and a colored research blimp playing piece, and take turns spinning the spinner, traveling the map, making rescues, gathering scientific information and answering questions. For out-of-school time
Click on a planet or a comet or some asteroids or a moon, and read a snippet about it. “Solar System Explorer” gives a graphic overlook of all the planets and their major moons in animated orbits. Where we have NASA missions, play a mini-game. For example, take command of the Cassini spacecraft and help it navigate the icy chunk mine field of Saturn’s rings. NASA's Digital Learning Network Special Event: Chat With a Mission Control Flight Officer

2012 Lunar Workshops for Educators

NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, or LRO, mission is sponsoring a series of workshops for educators of students in grades 6-12. These workshops will focus on lunar science, exploration and how our understanding of the moon is evolving with the new data from current and recent lunar missions.

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has allowed scientists to obtain the coldest measurement recorded in the solar system, map the surface of the moon in unprecedented detail and accuracy, find evidence of recent lunar geologic activity, characterize the radiation environment around the moon and its potential effects on future lunar explorers and much, much more!

Workshop participants will learn about these and other recent discoveries, reinforce their understanding of lunar science concepts, interact with lunar scientists and engineers, work with real LRO data and learn how to bring these data and information to their students using hands-on activities aligned with local, state and national standards. Laptops are strongly encouraged for those participating in this workshop.

Student Flight Mission Challenge -- Improving Earthquake Monitoring

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is gaining a better understanding of earth science processes such as earthquakes through airborne science research platforms. Using a specially modified Gulfstream-III jet, NASA engineers and scientists are using radar to collect data on how quakes change the Earth’s surface, which may eventually help scientists forecast earthquakes. NASA hopes to collect baseline data in critical areas in order to improve our understanding of how quakes affect not only the immediate area of the quake, but also the state of stress in the surrounding faults. This will help them improve their forecast models of quake probability and magnitude.

NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center and Jet Propulsion Laboratory are in process of identifying several new areas to collect baseline data for earthquake studies. Educators, grades 7-9, are invited to engage students in the NASA Student Flight Mission Challenge. Through this challenge, students will have the opportunity to investigate, evaluate, design and present a solution to a real-world problem that will expand our understanding of earthquakes at the global level. Students will form small mission teams to create multimedia presentations that suggest a site for a new earthquake science investigation. The challenge will engage students as practitioners of science through exploration of the airborne science research process that NASA scientists and engineers use to study earth system science. Students will:

-- Investigate the science.
-- Select a site for earthquake monitoring.
-- Prepare a flight plan.
-- Develop a multimedia proposal for submittal to NASA.

The challenge can be implemented in a classroom, after-school or other formal and informal teaching environment. One student team proposal can be submitted per educator. Proposals will be reviewed and ranked by NASA staff. Select student teams will receive recognition as earth system science investigators, and up to three teachers will be invited to attend the Airborne Research Experiences for Educators and Students, or AREES, 2012 summer academy.

DEADLINE EXTENDED: Informal Educator Workshop: International Space Station -- Engaging Your Audience in Low Earth Orbit

NASA's International Space Station, also known as ISS, and the ISS National Laboratory provide unparalleled opportunities for educators to connect students and other audiences directly to science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.

On March 24-25, 2012, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, or JPL, in Pasadena, Calif., will host an educator workshop that will include science presentations by NASA experts, demonstrations of hands-on activities, ISS Live! website activities, educational resources and best practices for creating content and educational activities in informal settings. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to network with fellow participants to enable future collaborations.

National Spaced Out Sports Design Challenge

Students in grades 5-8 throughout the United States are invited to participate in Spaced Out Sports, a national design challenge that applies Newton’s Laws of Motion by designing a game for the International Space Station astronauts to play in space. The goal is for students to learn the science behind the game on Earth and in microgravity.

Students will submit game demonstrations via a playbook and video. Submissions will be accepted from schools, home school groups, after-school or enrichment programs. Awards include: First Place -- NASA school-wide or program-wide celebration (U.S. teams only); top three teams -- games played on the space station and recorded for a future broadcast; all contributing schools and programs -- opportunity to participate in a Digital Learning Network webcast with astronauts on the space station.

Entries are due March 16, 2012.

Spaced Out Sports student and educator resources include posters, bookmarks, curriculum guides, career videos and Digital Learning Network modules. All include NASA astronauts, engineers and celebrity sports figures engaging students in relevant space-sports connections by explaining and demonstrating the science behind their work and/or games. The Pre-Service Teacher Institute is a one-week summer residential session for early childhood and elementary education majors preparing to teach in an elementary or middle school classroom. Three institutes will take place this year: June 18-22 (for Houston and surrounding areas), June 24-30 and July 8-14, 2012. All events will take place at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

College students from diverse backgrounds will be exposed to aerospace, mathematics and science enrichment activities. Pre-service teachers are able to interface with NASA personnel and tour Johnson Space Center facilities while learning to incorporate NASA's cutting-edge research into lesson plans for elementary and intermediate school students.

Join the Worldwide GLOBE at Night 2012 Campaign

GLOBE at Night is a worldwide, hands-on science and education program for primary and secondary schools. The GLOBE at Night project encourages citizen-scientists worldwide to record the brightness of the night sky. During four select sets of dates, children and adults match the appearance of a constellation (Orion or Leo in the northern hemisphere, and Orion and Crux in the southern hemisphere) with seven star charts of progressively fainter stars. The map is located at http://www.globeatnight.org. Participants then submit their choice of star chart online with their date, time and location to help create a light-pollution map worldwide.

The GLOBE at Night 2012 campaign dates are March 13-22 and April 11-20, 2012. Over 68,000 measurements have been contributed from more than 115 countries over the last six years of two-week campaigns.

Children and adults can submit their measurements in real time if they have a smart phone or tablet. To do this, use the Web application at http://www.globeatnight.org/webapp/. With smart phones and tablets, the location, date and time are put in automatically. And if you do not have a smart phone or tablet, there are user-friendly tools on the GLOBE at Night report page to find latitude and longitude.

Through GLOBE at Night, students, teachers, parents and community members are amassing a data set from which they can explore the nature of light pollution locally and across the globe. NASA's Digital Learning Network Presents "Women in STEM" Webcast Series

In honor of Women's History Month, NASA's Digital Learning Network is pleased to invite you and your students to take part in a special event series titled "Women in STEM."

Various subject matter experts from different NASA centers will be in the Digital Learning Network studios for a series of free webcasts focusing on how women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields contribute to NASA. Selected classrooms will be able to interact live with the experts in the studio. Each event will be webcast to allow students from all over the world to watch the interviews. Any student can interact by sending questions via email.

The schedule of events through March 2012 includes:

New ISSLive! Application Available for iPhone, iPad and Android

NASA announces the release of the ISSLive! app for iPhone, iPad and Andoid. This innovative, interactive app provides a novel way to learn about the International Space Station while on the go.

The ISS Live! app delivers live streaming data from the International Space Station. Users can take a virtual 3-D tour of the Mission Control Center and the space station, and view mission control console displays with real-time data. Interactive educational lessons using the data, as well as crew and science timelines with individual crew member, social media and international science experiment details are also available via the app.

The Epic Struggle Between Birds and Pigs Moves to Space with a NASA Science Twist

For nearly three years, millions of gamers have used physics in the battle between birds and pigs in the video game Angry Birds. In cooperation with NASA, Finland-based Rovio Entertainment, creator of the Angry Birds franchise, announced its newest game, "Angry Birds Space," on Thursday, March 8, 2012. NASA and Rovio are working together to teach people about physics and space exploration through the internationally successful puzzle game.

Game developers have incorporated concepts of human space exploration into the new game. From the weightlessness of space to the gravity wells of nearby planets, players use physics as they explore the various levels of the game set both on planets and in microgravity.

Aboard the International Space Station, Flight Engineer Don Pettit of NASA created a video using Angry Birds Space to explain how physics works in space, including demonstrating trajectories in microgravity by catapulting an Angry Bird through the space station. The video was shown this week to an audience at the South by Southwest Conferences and Festivals, an annual convention of original music, independent films, and emerging technologies in Austin, Texas. It is also available on NASA's website at http://www.nasa.gov.

UCET 2012 Outstanding Leader of the Year
Lori Gardner
Park City School District

If technology was peanut butter and pedagogy was chocolate, then Lori Gardner is the force of nature bringing the two into that sweet, sweet collision. As Curriculum Director of the Park city School District, Lori has put into place the cultural, curricular, organizational and technical necessities to successfully implement 1:1 computing in Park City’s secondary schools. Additionally, she serves as the Executive Director of the Utah Middle Level Association and is the founding chair of Utah Student’s Connect Online High School Consortium. Her efforts to exploit technology for the sake of learning are intelligent and relentless.

Mrs. Gardner’s work bringing 1:1 to Park City School District spans years, from when it was just an idea to consider, all the way through its implementation. She took a lead role in creating Utah Students Connect, gathering the resources and efforts of seven districts to initiate a brand new online high school that is already up and running.

UCET is honored to award Lori Gardner our 2012 Outstanding Leader of the Year Award.

Brian Blake
Nebo School District

Innovative and supportive are two descriptors that define Mr. Brian Blake in his roles as teacher and colleague at Payson High School, particularly in regard to his drive for technology integration in the school environment. In the past, Brian had plenty of interesting experiments and lively discussions in his science classrooms. Technology has enabled his students to watch live operations and interact with the world of biology that exists outside of the classroom in other ways.

Two years ago, Brian was asked to forgo the traditional textbook in his courses in favor of open source and creative Commons licensed materials. He was eager to develop courses that students would access online through Moodle. What has followed may well have the most important and enduring impact of all -- the teachers who teach the same science course throughout the district are sharing Brian’s courses in Moodle, are collaborating on the content on an ongoing basis, and are functioning as a powerful professional learning community on a district-wide scale.

UCET is please to award Brian Blake our 2012 Outstanding Teacher of the Year award.

Robert Schmoyer
Nebo School District

Robert Schmoyer is the network engineer for Nebo School District.. He has been with the school district for eight years. He manages the district’s network connecting 40 schools and several other facilities. He works closely with UEN, CentraCom, and Spanish Fork Community Network to keep the network operational.

Thanks to Robert students, teachers, administrators, and other district employees have a reliable network to use with both wired and wireless devices. They have confidence that it will generally be up and that it will be fixed as quickly as possible if it goes down.

UCET recognizes Robert Schmoyer for the 2012 Jack Erickson Excellence in Technology Services Award.

Canyons School District

Camille Cole is an outstanding young educator. Her work in the Canyons School District as an Educational Technology Specialist has shown that she is a skilled and innovative educator.

She is the lead over several important projects, including the annual District Film Festival, school technology grants, and the District’s new Educational Technology Endorsement program for elementary and secondary teachers. In fact, Camille has been the driving force behind the creation and implementation of the Ed Tech Endorsement program, creating an amazing opportunity for professional growth in Canyons School District.

The administrators, teachers, and students Camille works with trust her as an expert in teaching, educational technology, and curriculum. She trains them in technology tools and software, helps them with classroom projects, and models best teaching practices.

UCET is honored to award Camille Cole as our 2012 Outstanding Young Educator of the Year.

UCET 2012 Making It Happen Award
Rachel Murphy
Granite School District

Rachel worked hard to write and received an ARRA EETT grant for Kearns High School starting the 2010-2011 school year. She was the lead person and did the majority of legwork in writing the grant.

Her forward thinking and vision of what the possibilities could be for the students and teachers at Kearns High was the motivation for taking on such an enormous task. The proposal of the grant was to provide a 1:1 iTouch initiative at the high school which consists of over 1600 students and 80 teachers.

Once the grant was awarded, Rachel really went to work. She worked as the coordinator of the grant, covering budgets, rollout of hardware, and professional development for teachers and staff. The leadership team at Kearns were all involved with this undertaking, but Rachel was the “go to” person throughout.

Rachel’s knowledge of technology and providing quality professional learning was instrumental in the success of the implementation. Her ability to reach students and teachers through relationships, positive outlook, and pragmatic understanding was and continues to be why the 1:1 initiative has been so successful.

Although the grant funding is not enough to sustain the 1:1 model without additional funding, Rachel has not been deterred. She continues to work hard to find additional opportunities and resources to keep the program going at Kearns High.

1. Windows Logo + L (takes you back to the Windows login screen)

2. Shift + Delete (Deletes a highlighted file and bypasses the recycle bin - careful, you won't get it back)

3. Alt + F6 (If you’ve got multiple windows open within a given app, this handy shortcut will let you quickly switch between them)

4. Shift + CTRL + N (Windows 7 made it a little easier to create new folders in Windows Explorer. Now you can just hit Shift + Ctrl + N in any folder to create a new untitled folder right where you are. The new folder will appear with the name ‘New folder’ already highlighted so you can type in your own name for it and hit Enter to move on to the next task.)

5. Windows + M (Press Windows + M to instantly minimize all current windows to the Taskbar.)

6. Windows + Spacebar (If you just want to take a quick peek at your desktop (for instance, to locate a file you’ve dropped there), there’s no need to completely minimize all your windows with the Windows + M shortcut. Instead, press Windows + Spacebar, and all of your open windows will turn transparent so you can see right through them. This even works with maximized windows and full-screen views. To return your view to normal, simply let go of the keys.)

7. Windows + Shift + Left or Right Arrow (If you use a dual-monitor setup to maximize your screen real estate, you might like to use one monitor as your primary working screen and the other as a holding pen for active windows. Or maybe you just need to move a window from one side to the other for some reason. In either case, hitting Windows + Shift + Left Arrow will move a current window to from the right display to the left, and using Right Arrow will move it from the left display to the right. If you only have one monitor, these commands will dock your window to the designated side of the screen.)

8. Windows + 1, 2, 3, etc. (Windows 7 introduced a new feature that lets you pin apps to your Taskbar for quick access. An even quicker way to access those apps is with this slick keyboard shortcut. Press Windows + 1 to launch the first pinned app in your Taskbar (from left to right). Windows + 2 launches the second one, Windows + 3 launches the third one, and so on.)

9. Windows + T (Windows + number launches pinned apps in your Taskbar, but if your apps are already open, there’s a quick way to scroll through them. Press Windows + T and you’ll highlight the first open app in your Taskbar. Press it again and you’ll move to the second open app. As you scroll through them, you’ll get a preview box just as you would if you were hovering over the icon with your mouse. When you get to the app you want, hit Enter to bring it to the foreground. This shortcut only works with open apps, and ignores unopened apps that you’ve pinned to your Taskbar.)

10. Windows + (+/-) (Want a closer look at whatever’s on your screen? Hit Windows and + to zoom in for a magnified view. While you’re magnified, moving the mouse around the screen will move you to the far corners and bring them into view. Windows and - zooms you back out again.)

SOLAR STORM Headed Toward EARTH!

While most of us slept, the sun was awake and having a tantrum. On Tuesday evening, it unleashed two of the largest solar flares in five years toward our tiny plant and the impact could be significant. The X5.4 and X1.3 class flares (the strongest category of solar flares) were first detected in visible and high energy EM radiation by NASA spacecraft. Associated with the flares were two CME’s or Coronal Mass Ejections comprised of charged plasma particles that could threaten power grids, radio communications, satellite operations, and GPS systems. Estimates of the two CME’s plasma velocities should put them in Earth’s vicinity around 7 a.m. EST, Thursday. That’s a speed of over 1,000 km/s!

Measurements of Earth’s magnetic field disturbance (KP Planet ry Index) are already showing storm strength. Auroras could be seen as far south as 40 degrees north latitude. Power companies are on the alert for strong ground currents that could disrupt service.

Starting with an impromptu flash mob, and ending with dozens of prizes - UCET 2012 stretched our limits and broadened our horizons.

Special thanks go out to our amazing keynote speakers, Rushton Hurley and Rulon Gardner. Each of them lifted our sprits and had us going for the gold. Google Seeks Entrants for Global Science Fair

Google is seeking entries for the second annual Google Science Fair through April 1.

Open to students between the ages of 13 and 18, the international competition asks participants "to be curious, ask questions, and perform science experiments to answer those questions," according to information on the contest's Google+ page.

To enter, students must register at the competition's Web site, build a site for their project, and then submit their site for judging.

Ninety regional finalists will be selected in May, each of whom will receive a Google Chromebook. The judges will then select 15 finalists to be flown to Mountain View, CA to compete for a chance to become the finalist winner in one of three age categories. One of those three winners will be chosen as the grand-prize winner.

In addition to the Chromebook, the 15 finalists will receive a Google prize bag with an Android phone, a Lego Mindstorms set, two Lego Technic sets, and a 1-year subscription to Scientific American.
The grand-prize winner will receive a National Geographic expedition to the Galapagos Islands, a $50,000 scholarship from Google, a learning experience of their choice at Lego, Google, or CERN, a personalized Lego prize, and one year of digital access to Scientific American's archives for their school.

The runners up will receive a $25,000 scholarship from Google, one of the learning experiences not chosen by the winner, a personalized Lego prize, 30 Chromebooks, one charging cart, and a Cloud Print Printer for their classroom, and a 1-year subscription to Scientific American's digital archives for their school.

Another contestant will be awarded the science in action prize, sponsored by Scientific American. This winner will receive $50,000 "to assist the winner to further their research and possibly to develop the project," according to information released by Google. They will join the 15 finalists in Mountain View to present their project and receive their award.

Participants can enter as individuals or in teams of two or three. The three age groups are 13-14, 15-16, and 17-18.

Teachers now have an innovative way to help students approach challenging biology questions with two new free curriculum supplements from the National Institutes of Health, or NIH,: "Evolution and Medicine" and "Rare Diseases and Scientific Inquiry." Both supplements combine cutting-edge medical research discoveries with state-of-the-art instructional materials that help students build their critical thinking skills.

"Evolution and Medicine," for grades 9–12, helps students use scientific inquiry in the context of medicine to understand evolutionary principles. Students will learn how evolution is part of our knowledge of human health, biomedical processes and disease treatment. The International Space Station Learning, Achieving, Believing and Succeeding, or ISS L.A.B.S., Educator Resource Guide consists of eight guided educational learning activities. The guide highlights the international collaboration involved in building and operating the space station, and provides an overview of space station construction and assembly. The eight activities in the guide cover topics relating to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. All lessons are aligned with national education standards.

The guide includes student sheets, lesson plan instructions, background information, answer keys and a certificate of completion to award to students after completing the activities.

RockOn 2012 University Rocket Science Workshop

U.S. university faculty and students are invited to a weeklong workshop to learn how to build and launch a scientific experiment into space. NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia is hosting the RockOn 2012 workshop June 16-21, 2012, in partnership with the Colorado and Virginia Space Grant Consortia. The registration deadline for the workshop is May 1, 2012.

The hands-on workshop teaches participants to build experiments that fly on sounding rockets. During the week, participants will work together in teams of three to construct and integrate a sounding rocket payload from a kit. On the fifth day of the workshop, the experiments will fly on a sounding rocket expected to reach an altitude of more than 70 miles.

Each experiment will provide valuable scientific data, analyzed as part of the student-led science and engineering research. The program engages faculty and students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills critical to NASA's future engineering, scientific and technical missions.

The Little Satellite That Could

The International Ultraviolet Explorer, or IUE, was the first experiment to explore the full range of ultraviolet radiation from the universe. Astrophysicist Andrea K. On March 24-25, 2012, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, or JPL, in Pasadena, Calif., will host an educator workshop that will include science presentations by NASA experts, demonstrations of hands-on activities, ISS Live! website activities, educational resources and best practices for creating content and educational activities in informal settings. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to network with fellow participants to enable future collaborations.

Registration for this workshop closes on March 9, 2012. A $35 registration fee includes continental breakfast, beverages, snacks, a box lunch and incidentals.
